Overview
RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” At one time it stood for “Rich Site Summary”. They both mean the same thing. The simple definition is that it serves clickable “titles” or “headlines” to a specific place where a reader can scan them, and click on the ones that catch his or her interest.

Click and Go
When a reader signs up to an RSS feed, the headlines will be served to the reader’s browser or even to his/her desktop with special applications. The headlines are served immediately upon publication, so an RSS subscriber always has the freshest headlines available. Many readers prefer this method to the barrage of emails from all the different websites they visit. It saves them the hassle of checking email constantly, looking for those gems that will give them information they want. Scanning the RSS headlines is much easier and faster.

This also eliminates the need to check each and every one of the reader’s favored websites every day, looking for new information. They like that! In this age of “hurry, hurry, hurry,” not offering an RSS feed to your readers doesn’t make sense. RSS feeds provide value-added content for your reader, and that is just good relationship-building.

How?
While you can upload and operate your own news aggregator, its an unwieldy job and best left to more experienced programmers. Besides, it’s not even necessary. With services like Feedburner, a reader can subscribe to your RSS feed and Feedburner will do all the works of serving the headlines to your reader for you (we like Feedburner!).

History of RSS
Netscape invented RSS. Remember Netscape? At one point, they were going to launch into the portal business. RSS, as an XML format, became a news gathering tool that they would serve to their site for their customers convenience. When they didn’t complete the portal project, they abandoned RSS.

That’s when UserLand Software picked it up. They didn’t stop developing RSS and created their own interpretation of the original idea through RSS 1.0. They’re still working on it. The most recent version is RSS 2.0.

So, RSS is a great service to offer your readers. They will appreciate the ease of having your news delivered right to them. Anything that makes it asier for your readers is beneficial to your online business.
