First, pushing your web site in other peoples’ forums doesn’t have it in mind spamming every forum you come across. Done properly, it is subtle and no-one will mind. You would also not be replying to open threads simply with the intent of name dropping your web site. This can also upset the moderators and they are apt to remove your web site name and its links. They should even remove your posts and your logon.

If you are posting repeatedly and become seen because an “expert”, then it’s apt that people will want to read more about what you say and that’s when the signatures come in useful.

Teenagers have definite interests they do not share with any other group. In fact parents often wonder what those could possibly be! Young adults and people in their early twenties would be more interested in dating and careers. More older people might want to read more about travel or retirement activities.

Age is therefore an important consideration when deciding on your audience. You might add language skills, area where they are living, culture and beliefs as well as education to the mix. You might realise that identifying your target audience is not as straight forward as you originally thought.

But don’t let this keep you back though. Knowing who your target audience is, is not really an exact science even though the marketers pretend it is. It’s often guess work.
